Surrounded by desert plains and mountains, the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Club has none of the distractions of city golf. The facility's location on the Paiute Indian Reservation, just 30 minutes north of the Las Vegas Strip, ensures pristine conditions and spectacular vistas unobstructed by homes or construction sites. Three 18-hole championship courses, all designed by Pete Dye, are the focal point of this locale. With its 15,000 square foot clubhouse and 54 total holes, Las Vegas Paiute is a superb destination for large and small groups, and is truly "Golf to Dye for." Something that sets this facility apart is the fact that these courses are away from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas life. There is no construction to be heard, no noisy traffic , no homes surrounding the greens, just pure golf. And of course, golf is the primary draw of the Las Vegas Paiute Resort. All three golf courses are Pete Dye designs and typify great desert golf. Named respectively the Snow Mountain, Sun Mountain, and Wolf, the courses were built first in 1995, 1997, and 2001. The three designs are fairly similar. Generous fairways, few carries, and a couple of water holes per course, a scarcity in the desert, define these three designs. For the most part, the golf is not too target-oriented, making it very playable for all calibers of golfer. With four sets of tees on all three courses, a number of different yardages are available. Each course is very well marked and the carts are fully equipped with GPS systems.
The original course at Las Vegas Paiute, Snow Mountain is a fabulous layout. Back when it was built in 1995, the clubhouse was just a tent in the desert, but from this one course, a reputation for excellence was established and a name made. Pete Dye's original design for the Las Vegas desert is typical to his style. Complete with the signature railroad ties in the bunkering, Snow Mountain is a playable desert course that is truly in the desert.
As the middle child of Pete Dye at Las Vegas Paiute, the Sun Mountain course thrives. Like its predecessor, it is full of Dye trademarks, including bunkers with railroad ties. The course is set in the rolling terrain of the desert plain, but includes spectacular views of Mt. Charleston, a favorite mountain getaway of Las Vegas locals. The course was built in 1997 shortly before the clubhouse was finished in 1998.
The newest course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort is the signature Wolf course. Completed in 2001, the Wolf is the longest course in Nevada, measuring at 7604 yards from the tips. The course is the most difficult of the three, but with four sets of tees, can also be quite playable.
The Wolf Course was inaugurated with a tournament. In 2001 the course celebrated its Grand Opening with Shell?s Wonderful World of Golf. Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb from the LPGA were the invitees and set the standard of play at the Wolf. The course, along with its neighboring relatives, continues that heritage by hosting a number of tournaments and corporate events.
